Applied Criminology

A revised edition (2011) of Module 2 in Criminology: An Introductory Course is now available. This Module concentrates on 'applied' Criminology, covering policing, crime and punishment, imprisonment, alternatives to imprisonment, crime prevention and 'white collar' crime. This is a very fast-moving area of study, of interest to almost everybody, with new developments reported almost every day in the media. This module will help you to understand the reasons for such developments and to consider whether they are likely to achieve the desired outcome. The Module 2 course comprises six units for study and two tutor-marked assignments. If you have already taken Module 1, there is an additional assignment that reflects both modules.

Law for Civil Engineers

Our law course for the Certificate in Commercial Management has now been completely revised by Hamish Mitchell, with assistance from Julie Beisner. To complete the Certificate, you need to take four courses chosen from five.

The revised law course is in two modules: Part A deals with general law, with an emphasis on civil engineering where appropriate, including Law of Tort, while Part B deals with industrial law, matters such as health and safety, waste regulations and insurance, again of course from a civil engineering perspective. The course comprises 10 study sessions and 7 tutor-marked assignments.

The course ensures that you will have a good foundation in law before you go on to study C Eng Contracts and other specialised topics at Diploma level. It can also be usefully studied by anyone working in construction who needs to gain a wide practical understanding of law.

Our congratulations to Rodica Petrea who has completed all five book-keeping exams to qualify for Membership of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers. Rodica enrolled in August and passed all the exams - Level I, Level II Manual Bookkeeping, Level II Computerised Bookkeeping, Level III Manual and Level III Computerised Bookkeeping - with distinction grades by the end of November. We think this is a record! (Her course work was pretty good too.) As a result, Rodica has been awarded an ABCC Certificate of Merit (see http://http://www.homestudy.org.uk).
Rodica is 23 and from Moldova. Her success was due to her own hard work and determination but she also has a pat on the back for her Tutor, Ray Taylor, whom she describes as 'the best tutor ever'.
We wish Rodica continued success in her career.

The ACCA is introducing a new exam and qualification scheme for CAT this year under this new title. Awards are made at each level.

Intermediate Certificate in Financial & Management Accounting
Maintaining Financial Records (FA2)
Managing Costs & Finance (MA2)
Diploma in Accounting & Business
Four above papers plus
Accounting in Business (FAB)
Management Accounting (FMA)
Financial Accounting (FFA)
Certified Accounting Technician
Diploma in Accounting & Business plus 2 of three optional papers and 1 year's practical experience
In addition candidates will take a free online paper (once only) on professionalism & ethics
The ACCA is accepting registrations for the new scheme from January 2011 for a first exam in December 2011. Newly registered students will be permitted to take some CB exams from Feb-Nov 2011.
Transitional Arrangements
Existing CAT students will transfer to FIA in August 2011, depending on their June 2011 exam result.

Book-keeping - we will pay for your mocks

Following the introduction of its computer-based exams for Level II and Level III Manual Book-keeping last month, the Institute of Certified Book-keepers now offers candidates an online mock exam for Levels I & II with Level III to follow shortly. The mocks cost £10. If you are studying with DLP, we will pay this for you provided that you complete our own (manual) mock exam first. Just e-mail me or your Tutor when you are ready for your online mock exam. We will pay the ICB fee and the ICB will send you a link to the mock exam. Read Ray Taylor's blog on this website for his experience in testing the online exam for Level I.
Please note that from September 2011, those seeking ACIB must pass both Manual and Computerised Book-keeping at Level II and for the MCIB you must pass both Manual and Computerised Book-keeping at Level III.

Phillip Taylor MBE

Phillip Taylor, who has tutored and written Law courses for DLP since 1999 and for partner companies for even longer, has decided to retire. We wish Phillip a long and happy retirement in which he can pursue his many interests.
For the time being, Phillip will continue to tutor existing students who using our Personal Tuition Programme for the LLB but if you are taking other law courses please contact me so that I can allocate you to one of our other law Tutors.
Phillip's blog will also remain on our website for the time being and if Phillip ever wishes to pop in and leave a message or comment he wiil be welcome to do so.

Book-keeping: Our courses were re-accredited by the Institute of Certified Book-keepers this summer. We will be attending the ICB Conference this month to learn about the ICB's new syllabus which will be introduced next year. If there are any changes that affect our clients we will make transitional arrangements for you. We understand that a Level 4 Diploma will become available.
C Eng Quantity Surveying: The Institution has gained a Royal Charter and is now the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors. We will be changing all the references in our courses, which were re-accredited by the CICES last month.
